6 Tanning Mistakes to Avoid
Ready to perfect your tanning routine? Here’s 6 tanning mistakes which you may be making!
Mistake: Not caring for the drier areas of your body
We don’t recommend moisturising less than 24 hours before you apply fake tan as this can stop the tan from developing properly. However, the driest areas of our body e.g. elbows, knees, ankles, can easily cause fake tan to appear patchy if we don’t care for our skin properly. Right before tanning, we recommend applying a small amount of oil-free moisturiser to these areas and anywhere else you may need it! This will stop the tan from gathering and becoming patchy where your skin is dry.
Mistake: Rubbing your towel against your skin to dry yourself after washing
This is a big no-no! Especially the first time you shower after tanning. As you rub, you’ll encourage some of the tan to remove itself from the skin which could make your results fade a lot quicker. Make sure you pat the skin gently, no rubbing.
Mistake: Not blending your fake tan into your hairline
Don’t forget the smaller details! To avoid white lines around the edge of your face, lightly blend the tan into your hairline. This will help your tan to appear even more natural.
Mistake: Not exfoliating before tanning
Prepping the skin is essential to tanning. This means you want to exfoliate the skin thoroughly and moisturise at least 24 hours prior to tanning. If you avoid exfoliating the skin, you’ll be applying fake tan over dead skin cells which will lead to patchy, “scaly” and not very long-lasting tan results.
Mistake: Reaching for the bottle when you’re tanning your hands
When tanning your hands, you want to just use excess product on the mitt. Pumping out extra product for your hands can risk your hands being too dark. To keep your tan looking natural, after tanning your arms we recommend gently blending the tan out towards your hands and using excess product from the mitt to fill in between your fingers.
Mistake: Dressing straight away
Whether it’s self-tan or a spray tan, never dress straight away! Always wait until you feel dry and try to wear dark coloured, light clothing. This will stop your results from being removed as it develops and it will protect your clothes from staining.
